Seward, Alaska is a coastal town 128 miles south of Anchorage
on the Kenai Peninsula. A town of less than 3,000 inhabitants, it's economy is focused on fishing, tourism and shipping.
Each July 4th, Seward stages the "Mount Marathon Race",
from downtown Seward up Mount Marathon, which is 3,000 feet above sea level, and back down to Seward. The total distance is slightly over 3 miles. The race was first run in 1915 and has been held most years since that time.
The Seward Chamber of Commerce has an information booth located in a former Alaska Railroad observation car
, which is parked in the downtown area. Information on area attractions and accommodations is distributed from here.
For auction is a print of the Alaska Railroad car, with Marathon participants running by
    . It is
painted and hand-signed by the artist, Steward Hillyer
, the son of a fisherman. The print is actually in the form of a card, which measures appx 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches unopened and 11 x 8 1/2 inches opened.
On the back of the card is information about the Marathon and Seward
. With the card is a
    mailing envelope.
I do not know the age of this item, but
I acquired it in Seward in 1985
    . It is in
    excellent, virtual mint
, condition, with no rips, tears, writing, markings or folds. The card is printed on a textured cardstock material.
A great collectible for the Alaska, railroad or marathon collector; suitable for framing.
