Veteran Teutonic producer and director Richard Oswald made over a 100 silent and sound films in his native Germany before he sought voluntary exile in Hollywood after the Nazis rose to power in 1933. Oswald and Robert Chapin adapted the Gina Kaus and Ladislas Fodor play "The White Lady" and retitled it "Isle of Missing Men."
This movie, about deception and betrayal takes place on an obscure, uncharted island near Australia that serves as a penal colony in the South Pacific. The storyline concerns a attractive but mysterious lady who pulls the wool over an unsuspecting bachelor's eyes, against the backdrop of World War II.
Merrill Hammond (John Howard) has been dying to meet Diana Bryce (Helen Gilbert) who booked passage aboard the S.S. Bombay in Calcutta in route to Australia. The night before he is scheduled to be dropped off at the island of Caruba, Hammond gets the chance to talk to the sultry blond. Hammond persuades Diana to spend a week on Caruba and then catch a supply ship back to Melbourne where she intends to meet her brother. Little does the amorous Prison Governor of Caruba suspect that Diana is playing him for a sucker.
With thoughts of romance dancing in his head, Hammond sets her up in a lovely bungalow. What he does not realize is that Diana is the wife of Dan Curtis (Gilbert Roland), one of his most hard-boiled prisoners. She has deliberately seduced the warden with the sole purpose of helping Curtis escape. Will the lover's plot will bring betrayal and certain death to the tropical isle?
