Amtrak received about 30 aging Conrail ex-PC, nee-PRR GG1s when
most of America’s railroads turned passenger service over to Amtrak in
1971. Most were renumbered in the 900-929 series by Amtrak. Most of
the PC G’s retained the “shoe polish black” paint with the addition of a
big new Amtrak logo, but about a half-dozen units received a version of
the early Amtrak paint scheme depicted in Andy’s dramatic painting.
By the time Amtrak’s new paint design became standard, the G’s were
all retired, replaced by Amtrak’s brand new AEM-7 electrics. All GG1s
were retired by 1983. But these 100+ mph beauties will be remember-
ed fondly for as long as there are rail fans.
