    ABOUT THE STAMP
This stamp is to commemorate a great achievement of Brazilian livestock: the recognition of Brazil by the World Organization for Animal Health as a zone free of foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination. For this, the stamp’s graphic design is composed by the title that communicates objectively the achievement and also by the image of a Nellore ox, one of the Zebu breeds. Zebu accounts for more than 80% of the national cattle herd. The green field, the blue sky and the yellow sun are references to the colors of the Brazilian flag. Another detail is the earring of the ox, which guarantees its traceability with registration of the genealogy from birth to the end of its life, but in the image highlights the year in which Brazil will receive this important international recognition. Photography techniques and computer graphics were used to create the stamp
    FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE
Foot-and-mouth disease is an infectious disease caused by a virus that affects mainly cloven-hoofed animals, such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, swine and some wild species. The disease causes high fever, sores in the animal’s mouth and legs, loss of weight and a greater propensity to develop other diseases. Foot-and-mouth disease virus is highly contagious and can rapidly infect a large number of susceptible animals, causing production losses, severe trade restrictions and may harm the economic balance. In Brazil, the disease prevention is mainly done through the operation of continuous surveillance structures and the protection of free zones, assessments and risk management, and the systematic and mandatory vaccination of cattle and buffaloes. During the disease eradication process in the country, the prevalence of disease free zones with vaccination predominated. Today, the State of Santa Catarina is the only Brazilian State recognized as an area free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination. In October 2017, Brazil submitted to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) a request for recognition of the last areas in the country (Roraima, Amapá and parts of the States of Amazonas and Pará) as a foot-and-mouth disease free zone with vaccination. The petition is under review and is expected to be approved at the 86th General Session of the OIE World Assembly, to be held from 20 to 25 May 2018 in Paris. If approved, Brazil will receive the last certification expected, so that its entire cattle herd susceptible of the country is contemplated with the disease-free zones implemented so far, which will certainly reflect in the expansion of the international markets to the Brazilian meat, generating benefits and growth in the country's agriculture and cattle raising sector. At the same time, the Brazilian official veterinary service, with the participation of the private sector, has initiated a new process that seeks to expand the FMD-free zone without vaccination in the country in the coming years Brazil may achieve the animal health status as a country free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination until 2023. Thus, the National Program for the Eradication and Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (PNEFA), based on the PNEFA Strategic Plan 2017-2026 and international guidelines, aims to complete the process of eradicating the disease in the national territory and to support this animal health condition. With this release, Correios appreciates the progress made in the eradication of foot-and-mouth disease in the national territory and promotes the work being done in order to achieve the new goals established for its final stage, which will contribute to certify the quality of the meat produced and exported by the Brazil.
