    Description

    DEMO DERBY
Travis Edward Pike suggested the idea for a crash-action movie to his father, independent filmmaker James A. Pike, just before leaving for boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Six months later, on his way to overseas duty in Germany, his father screened the black and white footage from a demolition derby he’d filmed at Norwood Arena, and Travis wrote the title song arranged by Arthur Korb and performed by The Rondels. The finished film, DEMO DERBY, premiered in Boston’s downtown Paramount Theater on June 24, 1964, where it was billed with Frank Sinatra in ROBIN AND THE SEVEN HOODS. That same day it opened in other New England theaters with Elvis Presley in VIVA LAS VEGAS, and before the year was out, it had played on thousands of screens across the country, with The Beatles HARD DAY’S NIGHT.
