Recalled Legends of the West Stamp Sheet - Bill Pickett Error 29 cents. This is from the Lottery drawing of 150,000 issues released adding to the 183 sheets know to be sold prior.
A short time before the scheduled release of this strikingcommemorative sheet in March 1994, it was discovered that Ben Pickett waserroneously pictured in place of the legendary Bill Pickett, the first AfricanAmerican cowboy to be inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame.
The Post Office Department hastily withdrew all sheets fromcirculation, but 183 had already been sold before the official first day ofissue - some of which later brought up to ,000! To diffuse the uproar, alottery sale of 150,000 sheets was announced for single orders postmarked onOctober 1, 1994.
