    Description

For sale here is what I believe to be a calendar lithograph from 1928 for the Santa Fe Railroad Company.  The Santa Fe Railroad logo is easily seen in the upper left hand corner.  The viewable image measures 12 1/4" wide and about 11" tall.  It is surrounded by a white matte and framed under plexiglass in an oak frame.  The matte, plexiglass and oak frame are of recent origin.   The framed piece measures 18 3/8" wide by 17 1/8" tall.  In the lower left corner in the lithograph is the artist's name--E.I. Couse, N.A. Below the image is printed "Copyright 1927 by W.J. Black."  (Walter J. Black Publishing went out of business in 1929.)    In the bottom center of this piece above "THE CHIEF" is printed "Lithographed in USA," and below "THE CHIEF" is printed "From Painting by E.I. Couse, N.A."  In the lower right hand corner is printed "American Lithographic Co. NY USA."  This company also went out of business in 1929.  I found several reference to the fact that the Couse lithograph "The Chief" was used on the Santa Fe Railroad calendar in 1928.  Please look carefully at all of the photos as they perhaps can better describe this lithograph than I can using words.  To my knowledge, this lithograph has not been reproduced.
The colors in this lithograph are good.  The white matte is clean, and the unfinished oak frame is in nice condition.  If you are a fan of E.I. Couse's works, this would be a perfect addition to your collection.   It would also be a great addition to any railroad collection.  This lithograph is listed and being sold "as found" with no return available.
