Description
This is a 16mm, color, sound, film written and directed by Albert Lamorisse called "The Red Balloon" (1956). It runs about 34 minutes , has complete head and end titles, Has good color with a little fade (see pix), has some heavy lines/wear (mostly on the right hand side - see photos- esp the close-up of the kid), about 4 smooth splices, and a slight vinegar smell (which is probably the reason for the warping....). This print has some warping issues. It played fine (the very beginning is a bit wavy, then smooths out), but in rewinding the film, it winds unevenly and almost wont fit back on the reel. It probably needs to be treated with some sort of lubricant. Still a very watchable print- with a low opening price due to warping and vinegar.....A Classic and Rare Children's film !!
Albert Lamorisse's exquisite The red balloon remains one of the most beloved children's films of all time. In this deceptively simple, nearly wordless tale, a young boy discovers a stray balloon, which seems to have a mind of its own, on the streets of Paris. The two become inseparable, yet the world's harsh realities finally interfere. With its glorious
palette and allegorical purity, the Academy Award, winning The red balloon has enchanted movie lovers, young and old, for generations.

Update: Another film collector sent me the following info:
"The warping is indicative that your print is dye transfer IB technicolor. Sometimes the opening titles were not technicolor so if you spool into the film and look at the sound track and it looks grey with a sound track that looks like a bar code, it's tech."
Here's the cu photo. I still don't think that it is IB Tech - but others know more than I do.
Also - when I re-opened the can to check this info - there WAS a slight vinegar smell.
